Compilation Games – SEGA Genesis Collection

Recently, I did an article on AtGame’s SEGA mini.  It is just so-so.  I think a much better deal would be to purchase one of the compilation games that I am going to discuss now.  I own two of them – The SEGA Genesis Collection for the PSP and Sonic’s Genesis Collection.  These are both winners and you can’t go wrong with them.

They both contain all of the classics for the system.  The XBox 360 game has 49 games, some of which you have to unlock.  I actually like the fact that you have to unlock the games as it makes you play games that you may not otherwise.  For example, I wanted to unlock Phantasy Star 1, but I had to reach a certain objective in Sonic the Hedgehog first.  I’m not a huge fan of Sonic, but I did have fun trying to hit that objective.  As with every XBox 360 game, there are a multitude of achievements and you get ratings for each game.  Fun stuff!

The PSP game has 33 games.  Again, some are unlockable.  I haven’t spent a ton of time with this version, but it does have the classics you’re likely familiar with – Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Vectorman, Sonic, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, Ecco, etc.  I prefer the XBox version, but this one is great because you can take the games with you.  Of course, I’ve got my GCW Zero, so I just tend to take that as I have just about every Genesis game ever made on it.  But still, this is a more “moral and legal” option.

atgames-sega-mini

So when Nintendo announced that it was coming out with its mini-NES, pre-loaded with 30 awesome titles, SEGA came out with an announcement stating that it was coming out with something similar for the 25th anniversary of Sonic.  I want to give everyone an honest warning about what this product actually is.

This device will be manufactured by AtGames.  I have the one released in 2014.  We got some play time with it this weekend and it’s just ok.  The first problem is that the remotes are IR, meaning that you must have line of sight.  As you play the games and naturally move around, you might lose that line of sight and you are SOL in fast-paced games like Sonic.

Next, it doesn’t work well with my Vizio HD TV.  It comes with a cable with only the video (yellow) RCA connector and the white audio.  This means that we only have black and white on this TV.  We do have color on an older TV, but beware with newer HDMI TVs.  Because it only has one audio connector, it’s only mono sound.  I’m not sure why they did this as Genesis games were in stereo.

Next, the 80 games are actually only 40 Genesis titles.  The rest are homebrew filler games.  Don’t expect 80 awesome Genesis games.

Otherwise, it does play the three Genesis cartridges that we have and it is fun to play the older games.  It was only $40, so it’s not like we’re out a lot of cash.  Buyer beware for the new model coming out soon.

Look at what I found at Target for $40 tonight!  It’s an Atgames Sega Genesis mini console.  It comes loaded with 80 games and can actually play Sega Genesis cartridges!  It has ports for original controllers, but comes with two IR consoles (wireless).  I’m looking forward to playing it.  The reviews are pretty mixed on it, so we’ll see how those games stand up.  I’ll let you know more as I play.
