november-2016-games-with-gold

It’s that time again – geez, time is flying.  It’s time to discuss November’s Games with Gold from Microsoft.  Next month, we’ll get the following games for free:

  • Super Dungeon Brothers
  • Secrets of Monkey Island, Special Edition
  • Murder, Soul Suspect
  • Far Cry 3 – Blood Dragon

The only one that I know anything about is the Secret of Monkey Island.  The Monkey Island games are always funny and entertaining, and I expect this one to be the same.  As for the rest, I’ll download them and check it out.  I’ve got quite a backlog of Games with Gold alone, not to mention the seemingly hundreds more around the house for other systems.  I need more play time!

There is a new video-game inspired movie on the horizon – Assassin’s Creed.  The games are excellent.  I was recently asked if I thought this will be a good movie, and I think it has the potential to be.  The game has a really interesting plot that can lend itself well to the big screen.  However, this usually isn’t the case.

Video games and movies have long had a love-hate relationship.  What makes a good movie often doesn’t translate to a good game, and what makes a good games really doesn’t work very well as a static movie.  There have been some exceptions – I enjoyed Doom, although many will tell you it sucked.  The Tomb Raider movies haven’t been terrible and even Resident Evil was ok.

Then there were movies like Super Mario Brothers, which was just terrible.  They tried to make a movie out of a game that really doesn’t have a story line outside of “the princess is in another castle”.  I know World of Warcraft came out recently as well.  I haven’t seen it, but I really don’t have any interest to, either.

Often times the games that are based on movies are just ok.  They are generally licensed games that are designed to make money as a supplement to the movie.  Not a lot of effort goes into them beyond that.  Pretty much every movie-game I can think of fits this – Wall-E, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.  The LEGO versions of games are usually pretty good, however.

Animated TV shows usually make fairly good games as well.  The Simpsons has a long history of decent games and the most recent South Park title was a good one.  Family Guy has had ok games.  Of course, we can’t forget Pokemon, Dragonball-Z or Naruto, either.

Genre:  Hidden Object
Platform:  PC

I can be a sucker for casual object games.  They are a good thing to do when I’m trying to keep my mind occupied and often let me go into deep thought.  It’s a lot like mowing the yard or listening to music – it keeps the noisy part of my mind occupied so another part can work on some more complex things.

One of these such games is Clutter.  It’s a PC game and I found it on iwin.com.  They have tons of casual games on that site and this is one of my favorites.  It’s a hidden object game, but not in the strict sense.  It’s almost more of a matching game.  You have to find matches, sometimes two, sometimes three at a time.  The game gives you different goals or modes.  Sometimes the images are all in black and white or perhaps split in half.  They also have mini-games scattered throughout to break up the game a bit.

There are five different Clutter games and I’ve played them each through a few times, some more than others.  Clutter 1, 2 and 5 are my favorites.  I have spent many, many hours playing.  I was actually just playing Clutter 5 when I had the idea to write this post.

If you like hidden object or matching games, check this one out.  It can be challenging and fun!

October is bringing some good games to us for free through Microsoft’s Games with Gold.  Here they are:

-Mega Baseball.  I don’t know much about it other than it’s a baseball game.  I am a fan of baseball, and since MLB (Major League Baseball) seems to have an exclusive contract with Playstation, I don’t get to play many on the XBox.  Any baseball game is welcomed.

-The Escapists.  I am a big fan of Prison Architect, where I’ve spent so much time trying to keep my prisoners in, that I think that a game where you try to break out will be a lot of fun.  This one has been on my radar for some time.

-MX ATV Reflex.  I have a couple of these games that came with my PSP, but I’ve never played them.  I’ll probably pick this up as a “when I’m bored” type of game.

-I Am Alive.  I had heard about this one a long time ago but then forgot about it.  It’s a survival game, which is a genre I haven’t really gotten into.  I’ll pick it up just because it’s free.

As for last month’s games, I have been hooked on Earthlock and you’ll likely see a post about it before too long.

found-box

Look at what I found in the garage today!  It’s a box with a NES, Atari system with controllers (including the paddles), some Atari games, two Intellivision games and two Coleco pre-loaded controllers that you hook to your TV.  I thought we had thrown this one away accidentally when we moved.  It’s always awesome to find things like this!

I spent a good chunk of time reorganizing my office.  Most of my collection is now in one area.  I still have my 360, XBox original and XBone games out in the living room because that’s where those consoles are.  I took a few pics.  I’m putting close-ups of each section on the gaming gallery page.  Here it is!

It’s floor-to-ceiling video games!  And some work stuff, too.

Mario Maker 3DS

Look what was just announced today!  Nintendo is bringing Mario Maker to the 3DS.  I have considered buying a Wii U just for this game, but now I won’t have to.  They are leaving out the online sharing, which is a bit of a bummer, but they are including 100 developer-designed levels.  It is set to be released December 2 of this year.  I know what I’m asking for for Christmas!

Games with Gold Sept 2016

August is almost over, so it’s time to look at September’s free Games with Gold from Microsoft.  The games are:

-Earthlock, Festival of Magic – Sep 1
-Assassin’s Creed Chronicles – China – Sep 16
-Forza Horizon – Sep 1
-Mirror’s Edge Catalyst – Sep 16

I plan on downloading all of these.  Earthlock is a new game coming out on September 1.  It is a turn-based RPG of some sort.  I see Harvest Moon being tossed around with it, so it’s likely a similar style game.

I have played and enjoyed Assassin’s Creed 1, and I expect to enjoy China as well.  I’m not sure what is different about the Chronicles series versus the regular, though, but I’ll find out!

I haven’t played a Forza game yet and I’m looking forward to playing the first Horizon game.

I don’t know anything about Mirror’s Edge.  I do know that this is the sequel in the series, but that’s it.  It’s free, so I’ll try it out.
